Divergent Boundary
Divergent boundaries occur when the plates separate and the magma from the mantle rises creating a new crust as well as a volcano.
The earth's hard surface breaks apart, it breaks along parallel faults that tilt outward from each other. During this the block inside the faults cracks and falls in the Asthenosphere, as the block sinks it creates a valley called a rift. The magma rises from the mantle to fill the cracks therefore creating a new crust along with a volcano.
Plate separation takes a very long time for example plate separation along the Mid Atlantic Ridge causes the Atlantic Ocean to widen 2 centimeters per year.
Fun Fact: Harry Hess and Robert Dietz discovered this boundary in the 1960's
